Judicial Service

Over 30 years’ on- the- bench experience, consisting of 17 years as Los Angeles Superior Court Judge (1981-1998), 2 _ years as Los Angeles Municipal Court Judge, 11 years as Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Pro Tem/Commissioner and Referee (from October 1966). Private judge since July 1998 mediating and arbitrating hundreds of disputes on a full-time basis.

  • Civil experience includes presiding over a civil “fast track” department for 8 years from 1990 to 1998, plus many additional years hearing and deciding an exceptionally wide variety of complex and long cause civil matters while sitting as civil trial judge. Private judge since July 1998 sitting as arbitrator and serving as mediator in hundreds of widely varied disputes, including contracts, real property, insurance coverage, employment, personal injury including medical malpractice, business matters, legal malpractice, fee disputes.
  • Trial and Arbitrations: Highly experienced in hearing and deciding all types of civil disputes, including complex matters.
  • Private mediations: As private mediator have very successfully mediated an exceptionally wide range of disputes. Facilitative and evaluative mediation techniques are employed in order to achieve a high success rate. Successful mediations include cases viewed as difficult to resolve.
  • Served on temporary assignment as Justice Pro Tem of the State Court of Appeal, 2nd District (1982). Written opinions include Garcia v. Douglas Aircraft 133 CA3d 890 and People v. Masters 134 CA3d 509, cited in
  • Witkin California Evidence 3d ed., Section 570.
  • Twice elected by colleagues to the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Alternative Dispute Resolution
Available as, arbitrator, mediator, discovery referee, and temporary judge in all civil matters.

Law Experience/General Background
Highly experienced in the trial and settlement of a wide variety of disputes--virtually every type of case with the exception of family law.
  • Extensive settlement conference experience (VSC’s and MSC’s).
  • Mediation training from Dispute Services of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. General mediation and commercial and workplace mediation.
  • Substantial experience in discovery disputes and law and motion matters.

Education
UCLA, B.A. political science (1954); USC School of Law, J.D. (1959).

Deputy Public Defender from 1960-1966. Supervising trial attorney 1964-1966.

Military Experience
First Lieutenant Counter-Intelligence Corps (CIC), U.S. Army Intelligence 1954-1956.

Affiliations
Los Angeles County Bar Association; Beverly Hills Bar Association; California Judges Association.

Articles/Judicial Education
Author of law articles, including “When is a ‘Confidential Settlement’ Agreement Discoverable?” appearing in the November 1997 issue of Forum. Article “Release of Criminal Defendants Acquitted Because of Insanity,” cited by the California Supreme Court, In Re Franklin 7 Cal.3d 126, 145. Contributor to and participant in judicial education.

Have given numerous MCLE-credit lectures before a variety of Los Angeles law firms on the subject:“Is Your Settlement Confidential and Enforceable?”
